The $9K Eye Drops

As you may or may not know, I had cataract surgery on both eyes about two months ago. Things have not gone as planned, mainly because of my severe dry eyes, which I’ve had for years. (That’s one reason why I haven’t been taking photos recently.)

Anyway, my next cataract lens adjustment has been delayed again until I get my dry eyes under control. My doctor prescribed some eye drops that should help.

I stopped by the pharmacy today with the prescription and asked how much the drops would cost if I paid out-of-pocket. I’ve found on a few occasions that it is cheaper that way instead of using insurance. The pharmacist replied, “The out-of-pocket price for a two-month supply is slightly more than $9,000.” WTFudge!!! Nine grand!!! I actually started to cry. And suddenly, my dry eyes were filled with cool, refreshing natural tears. Aaahhhhhhh. So, right then and there, I decided that twice a day, when I needed the drops, I would drive to a nearby drugstore and ask the pharmacist how much the drops would cost me. After hearing their reply, I will once again weep uncontrollably and naturally lubricate my dry eyes. It’s a plan.

Note: Insurance did get the price down to several hundred dollars, but I’m still considering implementing my idea.

I know that I should have seen it coming, but, at this point, I can’t see anything coming … or going.
